Driving Safety: Use of Seat Belts, Helmets, and Child Restraint Systems
At the IV Torres Medical Center, we are committed to prevention and road safety. Therefore, we remind you of the main regulations governing the use of seat belts, helmets, and child restraint systems, both on urban and interurban roads.
Seat Belt: Mandatory and Vital
Seat belt use is mandatory for drivers and passengers on all roads. Below, we detail how it is enforced by age and location in the vehicle:
🔹 Front seats
- Children under 12 years old: may only travel if they are using an approved child restraint system. Those under 12 years old may use the adult seat belt if they are 135 cm tall or taller.
- Children over 12 years of age: must always wear a seat belt, regardless of their height.
🔹 Rear seats
- People shorter than 135 cm: must use a restraint device adapted to their height and weight.
- Between 135 and 150 cm: they can choose a child restraint system or the adult seat belt.
⚠️ Important: It is prohibited to place a rear-facing child restraint system in a front seat with an active airbag.
❗ Exceptions to the use of seat belts
- Parking or reversing maneuvers.
- People with an official medical certificate proving exemption.
- Taxi drivers on duty on urban roads.
- Freight distributors with frequent stops.
- Emergency vehicles and companions during driving practice.
Helmet: Mandatory Protection on Two Wheels
Helmet use is mandatory on urban and interurban roads for drivers and passengers of:
- Motorcycles (with or without sidecar)
- mopeds
- Three-wheeled vehicles or quadricycles
- Quadriceps
🔹 Exemptions
Wearing a helmet is not mandatory in vehicles equipped with safety restraints and seat belts, provided this is stated on the vehicle inspection card or technical certificate.
Bicycle Helmet
It is mandatory for drivers and passengers of bicycles when traveling on interurban roads.
🔹 Exceptions
- On long uphill slopes.
- In extreme heat conditions.
- For serious medical reasons (with an official medical certificate submitted at the request of the authority).
Child Restraint Systems (CRS)
The use of approved child seats is mandatory until the child is 12 years old or reaches a height greater than 135 cm.
🔹 Front seats
- Prohibited for children under 12 years of age unless using an appropriate CRS.
- If they are 135 cm or taller, they can use the adult seat belt.
🔹 Rear seats
- Children under 135 cm: must use a CRS adapted to their size and weight.
- Between 135 and 150 cm: they can use either a CRS or a seat belt.
